Warsaw Leica Gallery and Fundacja.doc invite you to an exhibition – “2. Leica Street Photo – There is only one moment.”
The exhibition is a result of a competition that took place on Facebook, where over 1400 photographs were send from both advanced photographers and “street novices”.
One of the jurors – Joanna Kinowska, curator and member of Fundacja.doc – said: “A lot of the pictures we’ve got were not so streety – there were many accidental shots and keepsakes from holiday. But taking into account the restricted time line – one year – I am surprised that we’ve got so many pictures. It struck us that we’ve got so few good photographs in colour.
It was very difficult to choose this final selection. Let say the last 50 of the chosen photos created a very strong set, that caused hard debate among the jurors.” Finally the jury members: Rafał Milach (a photographer), Szymon Szcześniak (a photographer), Joanna Kinowska (a curator, member of Fundacja.doc), Katarzyna Żebrowska (Gallery Refleksy in Warsaw), Rafał Łochowski (Leica Gallery in Warsaw) and Kuba Śwircz (a curator) awarded 20 photographs of 16 authors:
Damian Chrobak, Maciej Dakowicz, Ania Kłosek, Jakub Kamiński, Luc Kordas, Dymitr Kutz, Marek Lapis, Edyta Leszczak, Iza Nowak, Maciek Nowacki, Arur Pławski, Łukasz Sakowski, Mateusz Sarełło, Piotr Szabłowski, Dorota Wróblewska and Adrian Wykrota. Damian Chrobak, Marek Lapis, Maciej Nowacki, Mateusz Sarełło and Adrian Wykrota gets the award for the second time, as they were also in the final selection in the first edition of “Leica Street Photo – There is only one moment” last year.
And this is how one of the jurors, curator Kuba Śwircz sums up the competition: “Street photography often contains an anecdote or a jest, so we laughed, smiled or simply congratulate the photographers their ability to capture that specific moment. Of course many different pictures landed in the pot that we were choosing from. There were many holiday pictures, attempts to repeat well known frames, or sentimental views. But we were looking for strong shots, those that are perfectly clear and don’t need any explanations. In our discussions we realized that today it is very difficult to specify the meaning of terms like “street photography” or “decisive moment”. And it also appear that those who decide to take part in such competitions prefer the black and white over colour.” During the vernissage the authors will be awarded with collectible photographs of the master of Polsih street photography – Bogdan Dziworski.
The laureat of the special price (funded by one of the jury members – Szymon Szcześniak) will be announced during the vernissage.
He or she will get a choosen print of one of the photographs from project Into the Wild.
The vernissage where the authors will be present: 13th September 2012 at 7:00 PM Open from 13th to 25th September. Leica Gallery in Warsaw.
